Dr. H.E. Sigerist on Health

Health is promoted by providing a decent standard of living, good labor conditions, education, physical culture, means of rest and recreation… health is not simply the absence of disease; it is something positive, a joyful attitude toward life and a cheerful acceptance of the responsibilities that life puts upon the individual.

Question: Where can I find local organics?

Since you know the Philly area, is/are there specific place(s) you suggest I do my grocery shopping?

Here are a few tips that anyone can use to find quality food in their respective locations…

http://www.eatwild.com – Here, you can find all local grass-fed meat, dairy, and pastured egg sources. The website allows you to search by state and local area by zooming in on the pin-pointed map. It provides locations, product info, and contact info for farms, grocery stores, and things of the like.

http://www.localharvest.com – This site provides all of the above for local organic food sources: Online Stores, Farms, CSA’s, Co-Ops, Grocery Stores, Restaurants, Wholesale outlets, and Farmer’s Markets.

For those who travel, I managed to MacGuyver this way of finding organics while on the road: Google Map search on my iPhone (this can be done a computer, too) a group of key words before or when I arrive in a different city/area. My searches include: Organic, Grocery, Market, Co-op, Farm, Local, Vegetarian, Vegan, Health, Holistic, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe’s. Although I’m not a Vegan, if a Vegan place was nearby I’d walk to and inquire if they knew of any other “health” locations in the area that were more up my alley. It’s always possible to find quality, organic food no matter where you are or where you’re from. For example, while I was on tour with my band we had a show in Toronto. Through a Google Map search I was able to find a Co-op that was 2 miles from the venue we were performing at that night (we were only in town for one night). We got into town early and I walked the 4-mile round trip to the Co-op so I could get a good meal for the night and purchase food for the next day, too. Yes, that’s a bit much, but it’s an example of how it’s certainly possible to find organic food just about anywhere; it just takes a little creative effort and an understanding of the value that quality, organic food bring to life.

As for Philly, I highly recommend Birchwood Dairy Farms in Newtown, PA. They sell high-quality raw milk, raw cheese, raw butter, pastured eggs, grass-fed meats, fresh juice, homemade ice cream, and much more.

How Vitamins Were Born

During the Second World War 49-51% of men failed their physical entrance exam into the Armed Services. Both the English and the American governments undertook an investigation to understand why these who-looked-to-be-healthy teenage to young adult men could not perform such routine physical activities.

The United States hired the Mayo Clinic to conduct their investigation. One area that the Clinic looked was the diet of the failed men. At the time the food and grain industry were booming – food processing, bleaching, hydrogenating, bottling, and canning were all making names for themselves due to the war’s demands. However, that very same processing was also stripping the food of its vital nutrients… i.e. vitamins. The investigation actually encouraged some of the first vitamins to ever be identified, specifically B Vitamins. In controlled tests, when those vitamins were isolated and placed back into the soldier’s diet in food-grade pill form there was a significant improvement in their work ability, in their increased work load, and also in their mental clarity.

The US Government attempted to pass a law requiring food manufactures to fortify foods with vitamins (aka vita-lity). In rebuttal, the American Medical Association threatened to sue to Government for practicing medicine without a license, stating that the Government wasn’t qualified to tell people that nutrient-void food can cause dis-ease. After some back and forth the two entities settled on a law that only fortified two foods: Milk and Bread – that law still stands today. However, the vitamins used to fortify these two diet staples are not actually real – they’re laboratory-made, artificial, and synthetic versions of the vitamins found in nature (or that can be found in food BEFORE it’s processed, stripped, or bleached).

The major problem with using Synthetic Vitamins is that the body cannot properly digest, absorb, or utilize their properties as they’re intended. Dead Foods such as Synthetic Vitamins actually cause the body work harder to figure out what the heck it can do with the things, thus expending more energy, time, and effort to do a simple task of digesting.

Any food/drink that is Fortified With or has ingredients Added To will do more harm than good – they’re artificial and yield damaged food molecules

Any Vitamin found in a store that’s not Pharmaceutical Grade will tend to be Synthetic and can also be laced with unwanted fillers: aluminum, lead, corn, soy, sweeteners, and other toxic chemicals

Video Clip: The Cure is U – Can thoughts create disease?

A clip from “The Cure is U” – Can Thoughts Create Disease?

Where the does chemistry of the blood come from? The brain is the chemist – it releases the chemistry into the blood through our thoughts. What determines which of the chemicals that are released by the brain? Your thoughts, your beliefs, and your perceptions – your mind interpreting the world. My perception of someone I love causes me to release chemicals [that encourage] pleasure, bonding, relationships, growth hormone – hormones that when they get into the blood enhance a body’s health and maintenance of the body and growth of the body. When you open your eyes and you’re in love, you are feeding the best nutrition and information to the cells as possible. If I were to take the chemistry of negative thoughts, which are stress hormones (cortisol) and inflammatory agents, and add those to my culture dish my cells would ultimately die out in that cultured environment. It’s the chemistry of the body the regulates the behavior and genetics of the cell, and the chemistry of the body is controlled by the brain releasing all these different modulators of our health.

When we feel stressed, when we are frightened, when we live our lives in perpetual and chronic fear – that is a very different kind of signal. It’s not right or wrong, or good or bad because all of these signals serve us in one way or another. Chronic perpetual stress, chronic perpetual fear shuts down the ability to create the healing our bodies because we are in what’s called “fight or flight” and that kind of experiences signals our heart to tell our brain to the create hormones – cortisol, for example, and high levels of adrenaline – that prepare us for the “fight or flight” that we are receiving.

Question: Anxiety

I was wondering if you know anything regarding anxiety.  I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder.  It encompasses a little bit of OCD, some social anxiety, and some other stuff.  I went on an SSRI medication and had a very adverse reaction.  It basically made my anxiety skyrocket.  I just started a benzodiazepine, and it seems to work a bit, but I just really don’t want to be on any medication at all.  Know of any good natural remedies?  I exercise everyday, so I’ve got that covered.  Thanks!

Thanks for the question

Perspective:

You have the right idea that you don’t want to be on any medication so let’s dive right in on how that can be possible…

The best natural remedy is awareness.

What makes you anxious? Do you notice a trend surrounding your anxiety? Is it in certain situations? Is it at a certain time of day? Is it around certain meals? Is it around certain foods? Is it around certain people? Is it in a certain environment? Are you stressed often? Do you push yourself? Do you trust in yourself and others? Are you comfortable with yourself?

I ask these questions because they could all be factors – maybe just one, maybe two, maybe more than two. Anxiety is individually based. Yes, we all can have anxiety because it’s a stress reaction but we do not all have the same cause of our anxiety nor do we react to our anxiety in the same manner as the next person.

In order for you to overcome your anxiety you must be aware of what is the cause of your stress - anxiety is just a symptom. It may be a simple perspective of changing your diet around or it could be a deeper issue that deals with fear.

We experience stress from everything in our lives: diet, family, relationships, money, sleeping patterns, socializing, self-confidence, independence, exercise, etc.

You said that you exercise every day. Do you think that this could be contributing to your anxiety and daily stress? I am not an advocate of exercising every day because it is a major stress on the body and too much of a good thing can actually cause dis-ease. I would recommend that you take at least a month off from any exercise to let your body regenerate itself properly, specifically your adrenal glands (see: the Adrenal Fatigue quiz).

What is your diet like? Are you eating enough calories throughout the day? A lack of sufficient calories will cause stress OR you could be eating enough calories but they’re of the wrong kind: processed foods, junk, commercial dairy, artificial foods, gluten, etc.

“Personality disorders” as they’re so lovely termed are not an issue of personality, but the factors that contribute to that personality.

I hope this perspective helps. If you (or anyone) would like to speak to me personally, my email is jdperryhealth@gmail.com

Food As Medicine

Food As Medicine

Your body uses food as fuelan easy concept.

Your body uses food as medicineoften an overlooked concept.

Our body uses the food we provide it to strengthen its immune system, to build cell walls, to rebuild muscle and connective tissue, to make new blood cells, to think, to hear, to taste, to feel, to sleep, to eat, and so on… including to type and read this blog.

Have you ever considered what type of “medicine” you are providing your body? Better yet, what foods is your body actually made up of? We renew our red blood cells every 3 months (120 days) – Do you have oreo-made red blood cells? Vodka-made red blood cells? Genetically modified corn red blood cells?

Take care of your body by giving it the appropriate medicine/fuel/energy to function properly 24/7/365. I am not suggesting to abstain from Oreos, Vodka, or GMO Corn – they’re merely examples of a suggested perspective. Understand and balance however you see fit. Sometimes you need a little Oreo blood to make ya happy.

Why Do We Get Sick?

Image

How many people do you know who are constantly sick? They’re always tired, fatigued, complaining, annoyed, frustrated, sick of being tired and tired of being sick, and they can never get “better.” I know a few people that are actually sick more often than they are healthy. I feel empathy for them and no matter how much advice I could provide them for diet, exercise, or supplements, none of it will truly fix the cause of the problem.

Soooo why do we get sick?

The immune system becomes weak and that allows viruses, pathogens, parasites, or bacteria to thrive in the environment.

But how does the immune system become weakened?

Through neglect…

- A lack of self-responsibility and/or self-respect.

We must take responsibility for ourselves, our actions, our lifestyle choices, the community we choose to be a part of, and our experiences/perceptions of all of the above. The only person we can “blame” in this situation, whether the outcome is positive or negative, is ourselves.

- An opportunity to be comforted and fulfill our ego’s want to be wanted.

Humans are needy. We need to feel loved, to feel connected, or to be payed attention to in some way. Even when we’re not being paid attention to our withdrawal is a form of attention. We must overcome our ego’s wants and stand up for our spiritual needs. The comfort or approval of others will not matter when they exist within ourselves.

- Experienced shame of the past that manifests physically in the present.

When we have a shaming experience we can choose to learn from it and let it go or to bury it and hold onto the shame. We have the ability to store our emotions within our body. For example, it is said that anger comes from a compromised liver from years of drinking and/or stress, and according to Chinese Medicine the liver yields such emotion. Why the heck do you think certain alcohols make people angry? By releasing our emotional blockages about the past it will allow us to be present in the moment (the only one that matters), and to allow our body’s natural energy to flow with ease. I believe it is possible to physically lose weight when we forgive and release our emotional weight.

- An unhealthy spiritual body that correlates to an unhealthy physical body.

When we neglect our spirit and our emotions, then our physical selves will follow suit. We must take responsibility for ourselves, we must have the perception of when our egos make decisions, and we must release the past to live in the present – all of these will allow for a healthier spiritual body which is directly correlated to a healthier physical body.

No drug, pill, herb, stimulant, depressant, hallucinogen, or placebo can ever fix the cause of a dis-ease, only the symptoms. You can find the cause within yourself.

Exercise: Prescription-Only

I say “Prescription-Only” because too many people are exercising the wrong way. I walk in the local park a few times a week and we cannot help but to take notice of all the runners and exercise enthusiasts that have absolutely no clue about what they’re doing:

1) Form

2) Energy

3) How to truly benefit from exercise and not look like they’re killing themselves (which is essentially what they’re doing).

The same goes for when I visit the gym in our apartment complex: People queuing for the free weights just to get a glimpse of how their muscles look under tension, meanwhile they look overtrained, tired, swollen, and in a different world. I’m not basing my arrogant opinion solely off of these two experiences, rather as a constant observer of all the people I experience on a daily basis.

There are a lot of factors that go into a prescribing a beneficial exercise routine…

1) What is the goal in the long and short term?

2) Before diet is evaluated, is food being digested correctly to retain all of the nutrients necessary to use daily AND in times of excess stress (exercise)? Then look at the diet – Does it provide any nutritional value? Food intolerances? Food Allergies? Full of Grains? Full of Polyunsaturated Fats? Emotional Eating? Without a proper diet, exercise will not be beneficial.

3) Proper Posture? Exercise form NEEDS a proper foundation to work. Movement patterns and energy utilization follow suit. Exercising the wrong way will promote poor movement and the wrong muscle chain recruitment, thus having the body working overtime to compensate.

4) Extra External and Internal Environmental Stress Factors to Address? Define happiness and sadness, which is more influential in life at this moment?

5) Time, Space, Motivation, Dedication – Self-explanatory

6) An understanding of why all of these factors go into creating overall health with the addition of exercise.
