Metabolism, Stress, Cold Hands & Feet

I’ve been asked about (and have experienced) cold hands and feet on occasion. It’s not just a way of life, as it can be for some, but a true symptom of an underlying cause. External environment aside, the body isn’t meant to have cold hands or feet and stress is its most important factor. No, not running-from-a-lion stress (although that can be included), but dietary, physical, and mental (and thus all resulting in hormonal) stress can very easily be the cause.

You can live without an arm or a leg but you can’t live without a liver! (Paul Chek)

Paul is right. In a state of stress (or shock) the body will pull blood from the non-important areas of the body to bring it back into center where all of the vital organs reside. These vitals keep the body ticking; not-so-much the fingers, feet, or knee caps. The body knows exactly what it is doing and, as individuals, we must be responsible to keep an eye and ear out to understand, interpret and then react accordingly to what’s going on.

The temperature of [the] fingers, toes, and nose helps to interpret the balance between stress and thyroid; [the] fingers should be less cold as [the] metabolic rate comes up. In extreme hypothyroidism, the hands and feet can be very cold while the oral temperature looks o.k.; then as the metabolic rate increases, the difference between fingers and mouth decreases. (Ray Peat)

Thanks, Ray. He hit the nail even more on the head by correlating stress and thyroid function – metabolic rate, homeostasis, the epicenter of all-things-regulating-healthy-bodily-functions. Peat looks at the heart rate and body temperature as instruments in determining thyroid (metabolic) health.

It’s not rocket science to notice cold hands and feet, meaning you don’t need a thermometer to tell ya what you can experience through awareness. Why does it happen? Well, I can go on about diet, physical, and mental stressors, but I think I’ll be barking about what you intuitively already know. Instead, here are a few questions to get you pointed in a perspective direction…

  • What time of day do you experience cold hands and feet? Upon waking, before/after lunch, before/after dinner, before/after exercise, before/after bed.
  • What is your heart rate at the same times mentioned above?
  • Do you notice cold hands and feet or an increased/decreased heart rate when consuming certain foods/drinks, in between meals (note the duration), doing certain activities (exercise, showering, sleeping, work, school, sex), or pertaining to certain sleeping patterns (sleeping “on time” or enough)?

This perspective approach can be taken with ANYTHING, not just cold hands and feet. Lifestyle Journals are the new black.

Audio: How to love yourself by Paul Chek

How do I love myself?

Who else have you got to love?

Who’s more important to love than yourself?

So how do you do it? You wake up in the morning, you look in the mirror and you say “Damn, you’re cool! You’re the only person that I really know for sure can love me whenever I want to be loved. You’re the only person that can wipe my ass. You’re the only person that can choose good food for me. You’re the only person that will always be in the gym with me. You’re the only person that gives me an opportunity to look out at world and see the beauty of the world and see how amazing creation is. You’re the only person that lays with me under the stars and sees exactly what I see.”

The gift of life is a miracle.

There are 60 billion souls waiting for bodies and to have one is the greatest gift in the universe.

My advice to you is just to play more.

Stop worrying about everybody’s opinion. Opinion’s are like assholes – everybody’s got one.

All that really matters is how you feel.

Enjoy your day, think of things that you enjoy doing, give yourself permission to do that, and just really become your own best friend. Treat yourself as your best friend. Take care of yourself as you would take care of someone you love.

Give yourself permission to be honest about your feelings and express those.

Meditate on your curiosities. Ask big questions.

Have fun. The secret to love is having fun. If it’s not fun then it’s probably not a very high form of love. Start allowing yourself the freedom to have fun.

Look at yourself in the mirror every morning, just relax, look right into your eyes and say “I love you. I’m so glad to have you here. I’m so grateful to share this experience of life with you. I’m going to love you so much that it’s inevitable that other people are going to feel how much love we have for each other and they’re going to want to participate in our private little party. And then you’ll see people can’t resist you when you love you because they know that you’re safe to be around because you’re loving.

How can I tie that with purpose?

What greater purpose is there than enjoying life?

The purpose of life is to live.

There will never ever be another you with your fingerprints, your eyes, your smile, your way of seeing things, your way of breathing, your way of loving. You’re the only one. This universe has trillions of stars, galaxies beyond galaxies – it’s got no end to it and you are the only one ever. There will never be another one of you. The universe never duplicates anything – it’s a novelty generator. There is so much joy to be had by just realizing how fortunate we are to be able to watch the birds fly, to be able to see the grass grow, and just to watch the sun go up and down. Spend some time each morning – any time you can – to watch the sun go up and watch the sun go down. The majesty of it is phenomenal. Spend some time being honest about how mysterious and how miraculous it is that you’re here to have this opportunity and think of all the people that waste it away – torturing themselves in screwed up relationships and doing jobs they don’t want to do; being controlled by parents that have weird ideas in their head. To the degree that you can just dance and enjoy being you – that is love, my friend.

How Vitamins Were Born

During the Second World War 49-51% of men failed their physical entrance exam into the Armed Services. Both the English and the American governments undertook an investigation to understand why these who-looked-to-be-healthy teenage to young adult men could not perform such routine physical activities.

The United States hired the Mayo Clinic to conduct their investigation. One area that the Clinic looked was the diet of the failed men. At the time the food and grain industry were booming – food processing, bleaching, hydrogenating, bottling, and canning were all making names for themselves due to the war’s demands. However, that very same processing was also stripping the food of its vital nutrients… i.e. vitamins. The investigation actually encouraged some of the first vitamins to ever be identified, specifically B Vitamins. In controlled tests, when those vitamins were isolated and placed back into the soldier’s diet in food-grade pill form there was a significant improvement in their work ability, in their increased work load, and also in their mental clarity.

The US Government attempted to pass a law requiring food manufactures to fortify foods with vitamins (aka vita-lity). In rebuttal, the American Medical Association threatened to sue to Government for practicing medicine without a license, stating that the Government wasn’t qualified to tell people that nutrient-void food can cause dis-ease. After some back and forth the two entities settled on a law that only fortified two foods: Milk and Bread – that law still stands today. However, the vitamins used to fortify these two diet staples are not actually real – they’re laboratory-made, artificial, and synthetic versions of the vitamins found in nature (or that can be found in food BEFORE it’s processed, stripped, or bleached).

The major problem with using Synthetic Vitamins is that the body cannot properly digest, absorb, or utilize their properties as they’re intended. Dead Foods such as Synthetic Vitamins actually cause the body work harder to figure out what the heck it can do with the things, thus expending more energy, time, and effort to do a simple task of digesting.

Any food/drink that is Fortified With or has ingredients Added To will do more harm than good – they’re artificial and yield damaged food molecules

Any Vitamin found in a store that’s not Pharmaceutical Grade will tend to be Synthetic and can also be laced with unwanted fillers: aluminum, lead, corn, soy, sweeteners, and other toxic chemicals

Bryon Katie’s 5 Questions of Inquiry

Identify if your thoughts are worth your time and energy

  1. Is it true?
  2. Is it absolutely true?
  3. How do you feel when you think that thought?
  4. How do you feel when you don’t think that thought?
  5. Can you turn it around?

It is easy to get wrapped up in a thought.
It is easy to believe a thought to be the truth when it is only seen from one side of that truth.
We must allow ourselves to open up and see the big picture in every situation.
We must allow ourselves to open up and see the big picture in every thought.
We must understand the great power of thought and to not let it overpower us.
We must take control of our thoughts by taking perspective of them.

“By changing the mind, you can completely change the experience.”

The truth about saturated fats:

gwinning:

  • Found in animal fats and tropical oils
  • Do not normally go rancid, even when heated for cooking
  • Made in our bodies from carbohydrates
  • Constitute at least 50% of the cell membranes; they give cells stiffness and integrity
  • Needed for calcium to be effectively incorporated into skeletal system
  • Protect liver from alcohol and other toxins
  • Enhance immune system
  • Needed for proper use of EFAs (essential fatty acids)

boom.

Natural and Artificial Flavors

Ever see these words on ingredient labels? It is a loophole via the FDA that allows companies to lump a bunch of fake additives into one huge mask of category.

The FDA has set up the GRAS list – Generally Regarded as Safe. There are 2,800 international food additives and about 3,000 chemicals that fall under the GRAS list, which are added to the food supply each year.

The Average American eats approximately his or her own body weight in food additives – about 150 pounds/year. 15 pounds of that amount is just flavoring agents, preservatives, and dyes. Mind you, all of these fake ingredients are “Generally Regarded as Safe.” How comforting, Mr. Government.

To put these words into an example, let’s have a gander what a typical fast food restaurant’s definition of “Strawberry Flavoring” for a Strawberry Milkshake…

Amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, cinnamyl valerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenyglycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerbate, heliotropin, hydroxyphrenyl-2butanine (10% solution in alcohol), a-ionone, isobutyl anthranilate, isobutyl butrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl anthranilate, methyl benzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptine carbonate, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl salicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobutyrate, orris butter, phenythyl alcohol, rose, rum ether, y-undecalactone, vanillin, and solvent.

Stemming from this example, many people believe they are lactose intolerant when they can actually be food additive intolerant. A grain intolerance can also cause this but that’s for another blog.

Avoid foods that say Natural or Artificial – it’s all bogus.

Is Your Digestive System healthy?

Image

From right to left:

The Policeman – This is the goal: A soft, easy-to-pass, non-toxic smelling, 6-12 inches a day, rich brown colored gentleman.

The Flasher – Partially or undigested food. Often signs of food intolerances, allergies, or what is called “Leaky Gut Syndrome” where the intestinal walls become permeable.

Diarrhella – This is a sign that the body is intoxicated and the best way for detox is to GTFO via diarrhea.

Pellet Man – This is sign of severe dehydration/chronic constipation. When the body is dehydrated it actually draws water from fecal matter sitting in the intestines to use and reuse.

The Bodybuilder – Wide and hard to pass. This can come from a diet in highly processed and dehydrated foods. Fitness buffs that down crappy whey protein shakes all day usually have doo doo’s such as this guy. Commercial protein shakes are absolutely terrible.

Olympic Swimmer – This guy floats due to an inability to digest fats which could be caused by a bile deficiency. He’s often pale or lighter in color (not enough bile mixed with food waste)

The Stinker – The body is toxic. It can be caused by a lot of things that bring the body into a constant state of toxicity.

50 %

of a human cell wall is made of Saturated Fat. This is directly correlated to dietary intake. An unstable cell is comprised mainly of Polyunsaturated and Trans fats, which are two dominant ingredients in the American commercial food supply.

What are your cells made up of?
