See the big picture in everything

Happy Monday,

So, I live in the city of Philadelphia in the northeastern region of the States. We have all four seasons and are currently at the tail-end of a frequent-snow-fall-of-a Winter, heading for a-hopefully-warm-and-refreshing Spring. Everyone and their brother seems to be ready for Spring. We all thought mother nature was, too, because she gave us a few warm days here and there, and about a month ago we were blessed with a warm weekend in the 60′s (about 15 Celsius). But, last week, out of no where, the weather took a turn and we were greeted with significant snowfall. Ok, so my day-job has me primarily outside in all types of weather and I am able to interact with a good amount of people who share the same fate. 100% of the people I talked to that day were not happy campers… Where’s the sun? What’s with this snow? I’ll be good when this weather is gone! What a crappy day. Yeah, a happy spring to you, too! Absolutely no one – not one soul – could take the day for what it was (a gorgeous snowy day) and, instead, everyone dwelled upon what the day was not (not sunny and 60). Hallelujah blog post!

This perspective shift can be better summed up as: See the big picture in everything. Take a step out of your skewed reality, your constricted awareness, your filtered conditioning, your negative nancy-isms, and look at life through the eyes of – as cliche as it is – through the eyes of God. And by God, I mean, through the eyes of nature, through the eyes of a greater consciousness, through the eyes of a wholeness and connectedness, through the eyes of a universal understanding, through the eyes of sincerity and compassion, through the eyes of the universe. And by all of that shenanigans, I mean, let go of what you think should be, of what you expect, of what you assume, of what you judge, of what you’re holding onto, of what you impose and project upon others (including nature) so you can see, feel, hear, and experience the beauty in everything.

You, and only you, have the power to turn the 5 random-ass inches of snowfall on the second day of Spring into such a beautiful occurrence that nature so generously provides. You, and only you, have the power to turn any negative experience – it could actually be the most negative and daunting situation in the world – and turn it into the best thing to have ever happened to you, to your perspective, to your humanity, to your path, to your personality, to your mentality, to your emotions, to your spirituality, and to your inner self.

Intolerance, understandings, and Princess Diana

Happy Monday folks,

Having said that…

“If each man or woman could understand that every other human life is as full of sorrows, or joys, or base temptations, of heartaches and of remorse as his own… how much kinder, how much gentler he would be.”

- William Allen White

I came across the above quotes earlier this week and sat with them a bit. I sat with them to really take in what they mean to me; my interpretations according to my understandings, which is one of my points today. Quotes mean what I want or need them to mean to justify or expand my reality, respectively. According to my definition, this intolerance that Princess Di speaks of exists because people do not have a reason nor an understanding for tolerance to have a place in their lives. Said people are quaint in their reality of self-righteousness and existence, not co-existing. I suggest that intolerance is not really the issue at play. The language that we use when approaching such universal subjects is what gets lost in the definition shuffle.

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the late Princess’ approach to raise an awareness that we are so unaccepting, or perhaps impatient, and it is that which brings suffering to the masses. But, what struck a nerve for me is her use of the words, problem and intolerance. They produce such a negative connotation to such an inspiring perspective. What that quote says to me is that we need to be more tolerant. We need to be more able to put up with people’s shit. No where does it say how to do such a thing. No where does it offer an opposing approach. Not only do I read negativity, but I also read subjectivity because I do not believe that everyone can relate to intolerance. To relate to intolerance we all have to experience intolerance on the same level and I’m not so sure if that fits into everyone’s reality. Ya understand? This brings me to the second quote by Mr. William Allen White. I believe, with the help of White’s words, that the greatest reality (not problem) we face is what we do not understand nor care to understand, and not intolerance. It is from that foundation that breeds tolerance or intolerance. It is from that foundation that we accept or dismiss. It is from that foundation that can lead to joy or suffering for one or many. “How much kinder, how much gentler he would be” if we took the time to understand a reality that was not our own by using such relatable life experiences (sorrow, joy, temptations, remorse) that we all share to give oneself a glimpse into another’s journey. Sure, we don’t all have to live such cliche morbid lives, but the reality is that life can be tough if we don’t make an effort to understand nor give consideration to ourselves and others.

What quotes say is one thing for us to understand. What they don’t say and imply is a-whole-nother ballpark that’s rarely sees the limelight.

Written version: self-understanding and healthy results

Happy TUESDAY interntians,

I took a bit of a leap for this week’s blog-o-the-week by posting a video blog… of me… standing in front of a camera… shirtless… and headless (I blame the camera guy who’s name we won’t speak but it starts with a J and ends with a D)… rambling on about how I was able to achieve a resulted body as a manifestation of my mind. Idiot-approach aside, I sound like a professional wrestler during a pre-fight interview who just thinks he’s the shit. Not my intention + poor delivery = May have come off that way. So, by the looks of my daily hits, I’m ballparking that the video didn’t go over well. It didn’t go over well not because I look like a jackass. No. It didn’t go over well because I realized today… Monday… the same day that said blog was posted… that people enjoy my blog because of my WRITTEN perspectives… not my spoken perspectives. I’m certainly better behind the keyboard than my projected voice and shirtless attire (my stylist is on vacation). And, in the past, I’ve been told from peers that my blog is an easy and enjoyable read on the way to work or during down time. You would think something would click prior to a trip to devalue-city? Not this guy. I realized that I need to stick to what I’m good at, which is delivering an eloquent hot-mess every monday as a pile of words with a side of boomshakalaka. Plus, I can’t look past the fact that these days, without a decent established viewer demographic, AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR AN 8-MINUTE MARATHON VIDEO.

Ahem, the written version:

The purpose of my video was to put an image to the author, to put my talk into my walk, to physically portray how I am able to manifest my thoughts into a physical reality… a.k.a standing shirtless and talking about myself… and elaborate on  that manifestation: I achieved my healthy results by simply understanding myself, what I’m all about, why I’m all about, and what makes me… me. Obviously that understanding wasn’t really all-that-simple over the past however-many years, but I did eventually put into perspective the opposite of simple… complicate. I learned to stop complicating things, which then opened the doors for simple as a more direct path to the results and happiness that I desire. If I’m not complicating I can only be simplifying! For years I complicated the hell out of what I thought “health” was. My biggest issue was that I thought health was an external achievement, i.e. physique, diet, and exercise programs. No way in hell did I ever consider my current mental and emotional state nor the years of buried mental and emotional states that play an important role in this sweet life-o-mine. I constantly reached out externally, neglecting the ONLY thing that mattered in a pursuit of health… mahself. Along this pursuit I learned some things. I learned a few life lessons. I learned different ways of thinking that shed light on things that have been in the dark for years. I learned that I need to be happy with myself on the inside in order to be happy with myself on the outside. I learned that I am an absolute asshole when I think I’m right and that there’s only my way or the highway. I learned who I am by clarifying why I am sans [what I thought to be my] reality (hint: self responsibility regarding ev-ery-thin-g). I learned that health is so much more than my physical self!

I did not achieve these results because of a strict diet… I have my definition of healthy and unhealthy foods but I also need to live my life without self-imposed boundaries. “The world can expand when walls do not exist.” (Robert Fritz) I did not achieve these results because of any one superfood… I do have my preference of cooking oil, protein supplement, salt, et cetera but there will never be ONE food that is the be-all-end-all to health. I did not achieve these results because of a specific fitness program… I constantly try out different exercise programs and piece together what works for me, for my goals, and for my lifestyle. I am not healthy because I spend 5+ days in the gym… The world is my gym as long as gravity and my extremities exist.

THIS is how I feel when people see me and immediately inquire about my workout program or diet… Dude, how many days a week do you lift? What program do you do? What’s your diet? I enjoy the look on their face when I say that I might work out 3 days a week (4 at THE MOST), that I’d rather sleep than work out, that I drink soda, I eat bread, I eat full-fat ice cream, I eat saturated fat, I consume sugar, I drink coffee with cream and REAL sugar, I drink whole milk, I drink sugar-infested juice, I eat red meat, I eat fries, or that I rarely eat vegetables. Sure, I went through phases of insane workout programs and strict diets but I do not consider that to be healthy for me at this point in my understanding. I work out sporadically and consume “junk foods” because I truly believe they’re healthy by my definition of “health and happiness.” More importantly, I stopped defining health as just diet and exercise to create a better-fitting idea of what it means for ME to be healthy.

My mentality, my emotional well-being, and my spirituality are far more important than any physicality I possess. My body is nothing without my mind, heart, and spirit. These three are the foundation of my healthy results because THEY are my first priority, because THEY are healthy, because THEY are given the attention that they deserve, and because I have given myself the opportunity to understand why they are so important in my life. My body, my face, and my eyes will always show where my head, heart, and spirit are at.

I know it’s a little short and a bit jumbled, but it’s 1am and there’s 8-minutes worth of jabroni-talk that may have some more insight.

It’s all about metabolism

A higher metabolic rate translates to a higher quality of life. – This guy

What does metabolic rate have to with leading a quality life? Well, everything really. We know that the metabolism is the main calorie-burning epicenter – the body’s ability to turn food into biological energy and heat at a rapid rate AND with efficiency. We know that people like to boost their metabolism with shots of caffeine, energy pills, extracts, protein shakes, amino acids, steroid hormones, and hours in the gym. What good does this all do if the mechanisms which fuel bodily activities are not understood? I mean, why are people constantly taking shots in the dark when they have absolutely no physiological clue as to how their body actually runs, responds, reacts, digests, assimilates, regenerates, rebuilds, eliminates, converts, produces, reduces, or, the all-encompassing, metabolizes? I can take green coffee bean extracts all damn day long because it’s supposed to increase my metabolic rate (so then I’ll burn calories quicker, eliminate body fat, eat whatever I want and be “ok,” etc.), but how do I really know whether or not it’s working?

I’d say the best approach to elevating the metabolic rate is to understand what is actually involved in the metabolism. For starters, metabolism involves hormones and a lot of ‘em. The hormones involved require a balance with one another – within homeostasis. For example, in male’s there must be a greater ratio of Testosterone:Estrogen and in females there must be a greater ratio of Progesterone:Estrogen (yes, excessive estrogen levels for women is actually BAD). When those ratios are imbalanced and there exists a greater amount of [unopposed] Estrogen then the metabolic rate will likely decline because of the anti-metabolic affects of excess Estrogen (which can trigger stress-hormone reactions, hypoglycemia, muscle loss, weight gain, bacterial imbalance, encourage cell division, water retention, and also cause organs to become “sluggish”). We’ll go into Estrogen’s true-colors role within the body in another blog, but my point is to show how a simple imbalance can create an opportunity for a weaker metabolic rate – that is, a weaker functioning body. Other hormones involved include thyroid (T4, T3), pituitary, progesterone, testosterone, pregnenolone, cholesterol, DHEA, estrogen, serotonin (tryptophan), prolactin, insulin, glucagon, cortisol, adrenaline, and aldosterone (to name a few). 

So-to-speak, metabolism fuels the body and hormones fuel the metabolism. So what fuels the hormones? Well, hydration, nutrition, and rest, of course! Let’s keep it simple and focus on nutrition (because I tend to throw in hydration as part of nutrition since water should always have a mineral content, i.e. nutrition). Nutrition can be broken down into two categories: Macronutrients (Fats, Proteins, and Carbohydrates) and Micronutrients (Vitamins and Minerals). Macro’s can be further broken down into Saturated Fats, Monounsaturated Fats, Polyunsaturated Fats, Animal Proteins, Plant Proteins, Simple Carbohydrates, and Complex Carbohydrates. Micro’s go further into Fat-Soluble Vitamins A, D, E, and K, Water-Soluble Vitamins B and C, and Minerals such as Calcium, Copper, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, Selenium, Zinc, Iron, Phosphorus, Iodine, and Maganese.

Phew. 

Sleep is next in line as a essential platform to allow your body some time to rest, recover, and rebuild from a day-in-the-life. Whether or not you did anything today, your body is still working, digesting, assimilating, producing, excreting, and being a living organism that’s just trying to do what it needs to do to survive.

Alright, so I have thrown a lot of information at you and your probably waiting on me to tell you to do this, that, and voila – you’re metabolism is as good as new! Well, that can exist and the approach can be viewed as a metabolic recovery rather than a metabolism-boosting scheme (like we’re marketed) because, in my perceived reality of many people whom I interact with on a daily basis, most people are in need of a recovery – to get back what their body used to be, what their body used to be able to do, and how their body used to function with efficiency. Ever hear someone say, “I used to be able to eat that when I was younger” or “I was very active when I was younger so I could eat whatever I wanted.” While those statements may be true of the past, the mindset that the opportunity no longer exists in the present should not hold water. Throughout our American-way lifetime we are bombarded with metabolism-weakening opportunities: gluten, grains, processed foods, unsaturated fats, trans fats (spoiled unsaturated fats), inflammatory proteins, artificial sweeteners, additives, preservatives, chemicals, toxins, heavy metals, alcohol, dehydration, resulted constipation, antibiotics, vaccines, and you name it. It’s no wonder our bodies can’t do it anymore because the metabolic rate, the metabolic processes, and the metabolic efficiency cannot continuously work at top speed because of all the crap we put our body through and put through our body.

Take your body into perspective with metabolism: any physical imbalance is likely a result of a hormonal imbalance which is likely a result of a nutritional/sleep imbalance (minor lifestyle details aside). Boom.

Find a heart that will love you at your worst and arms that will hold you at your weakest

 

I recently came across this quote and my immediate reaction was an internally soft and simple, “Yes.” It landed oh-so-well because, to me, it represents so much more than what it says…

Connection, perspective, understanding, patience, balance, giving, trust, faith, support, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

These qualities are very important to have in a soulmate, a friend, a family member, and all-the-more important to have in self.

Are you color blind?

Do you see the world in black and white? Do you observe the world in black and white? Do you consider situations to be black and white? Do you take perspective on the grey?

Yeah, we’re not talking about the physiological trait that allows people to see the world only in the absence of color and the blending of all colors. I’m talking about your perspectives, experiences, understandings, and opinions on life.

  • Black and white – One or the other in a given situation, right or wrong, one way or the highway, take without giving.
  • Grey – An understanding that there’s more to a situation, no one is right nor wrong, an attempt to hear all sides to gain perspective, giving and taking.

The grey represents the ability to see the details: our conditioning, our programming, our influences, our education, our reasonings, our inspirations, our habits, our intelligence, our beliefs, our nutrition, our genetics, our environment.

The black and white can be the result of those details…

For instance, when a person is steadfast in their claim that a chair is black they could be very well fueled by their details: an education that taught them that “black” is actually navy blue to the rest of the world; the chair could have been in a dim-light room which made the chair look black, but once a claim is in place there is a conditioning of pride that prevents one to be “wrong;” the person couldn’t have eaten much all day and a lack of calories could have produced a “slower” brain response to think a brown chair is black; or there is a need to be “right” just to prove the other wrong out of spite, influences, habits, beliefs, reasonings, and just all of the above.

I used a very dumbed-down example to illustrate how our personal details can really turn something simple into a complex situation.

There are details to every situation. While it may not always be necessary to look into the details whenever an opinion, decision, conflict, difference, or confrontation arise, it certainly doesn’t hurt to consider them or to put them into perspective. Try to really look into the details of yourself first before you go ahead judging, assuming, or deflecting on others. It may take a while and it may bring up some painful truths, but getting to know yourself for who you have become can help pave the way for who you want to be.

The struggle for understanding

“The struggle for understanding is one of the most characteristic features of our species; that is why man is called Homo sapiens. The satisfaction of this urge is our destiny.”

I crave the concept of understanding; much due to my discovery and resulted blindness of my conditionings and mechanisms of what I believed to be “right.” My biggest downfall, if-you-will, was that belief…

“…the biggest of all blocks to improvement: the certainty of being right.”

I could only get so far in understanding myself because of what I believed in, and even that was ever-changing and ever-confusing… but I was just struggling to understand through my closed-off belief system.

It’s a crazy thing, this “being right,” because the word purely exists on an individualized basis. Right and wrong really don’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things. However, “being truthful” holds a more universal understanding. I think we all damn-well know what it means to tell the truthto be true to ourselves, and to be true to others, but do we always listen to or follow through with our truth? Is it possible that we may avoid our truth, our destiny, our path to universal understanding by replacing it with opinionated and personalized words such as right and wrong?

I’ll go further to say the dislike of a concept, a universal reality or truth, or of a self-responsibility may merely stem from the inability to grasp the idea behind it.

Let that sit a little…

A great step towards understanding is to figure out what you do not understand, whether it is about yourself, another, a situation, an experience, or an outcome, because what you do understand may not be true. Try to remove your filters, your beliefs, your personal opinions, your personal judgements, your personal assumptions, your own definitions of right and wrong, and intimately question or observe through universal eyes. Be open, be sensitive, be patient, and be truthful.
